THE 10 BEST THINGS TO DO IN AUSTIN

Austin really has it all—from its buzzing music scene to top-notch restaurants, from its prestigious university to a thriving tech industry.

It’s a dynamic city that attracts outdoor enthusiasts, foodies, and barbecue lovers, thanks to its sunny weather and lively cultural scene. Austin hosts countless conferences, concerts, and sporting events, drawing a global crowd.

This quirky, liberal city in the heart of conservative Texas is beloved by many. It’s one of my favorite places in the U.S., and I’m excited to share some top things to do that might make you fall in love with Austin just as much.

  1. Relax at Barton Springs: In the heart of Zilker Park, this natural spring-fed pool is the perfect spot to cool off during the hot Texas summers. You can relax on the surrounding lawns for just $5—though they often don’t check for residency—or for free on the creek’s rocky banks where you can also eat and drink.
  2. Explore Zilker Park: This 350-acre park in South Austin is a haven for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and kayaking. Don’t miss the botanical and the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens while you’re there. You can even rent a kayak and enjoy the water for $35 for two hours.
  3. Visit the Cathedral of Junk: Vince Hannemann’s backyard is home to the Cathedral of Junk, where over 60 tons of repurposed materials come together in a spectacular display of creativity that started in 1988.
  4. Catch a Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse: More than just a cinema, the Alamo Drafthouse is an Austin staple for movie lovers. They host unique events and screen a mix of mainstream, classic, and cult films.
  5. Tour the LBJ Library: Learn about Lyndon B. Johnson, one of America’s most impactful yet controversial presidents, at his dedicated library in Austin.
  6. Walk Through the State Capitol: Free tours are available of the grand Texas Capitol, which stands taller than the Capitol in D.C. Discover the building’s rich history and stunning architecture.
  7. Enjoy First Thursday: Every first Thursday of the month, the South Congress Hotel becomes a bustling hub with live music and happy hours—a great scene for socializing with Austin’s friendly locals.
  8. Unwind at Lake Travis: Just a half-hour drive from downtown, Lake Travis offers activities like swimming, hiking, and zip-lining. Rent a kayak or a motorboat and enjoy a day on the water.
  9. Experience Live Music: Austin’s vibrant music scene is legendary. Check out live performances downtown, especially at Stubb’s, a renowned venue that attracts big names.
  10. Discover Local Breweries: With over 50 craft breweries, Austin is a beer enthusiast’s paradise. Join a brewery tour, like the Twisted Texas Tour or Bike and Brew ATX, to sample some local flavors.

In Austin, you live the city rather than just visit. Forget the usual tourist spots; instead, dive into the food, drinks, music, and outdoor fun that make Austin truly special.
