Mozambique often gets a bad rap as a dangerous and difficult destination, and it’s true that few solo travelers visit. But after spending time there, I found that much of what I had heard was simply wrong.
Sure, traveling through Mozambique can be a bit challenging at times—think long bus rides and cramped minivans. And, as with any solo trip, you have to stay alert. But beyond that, it’s an incredible place: beautiful beaches, delicious piri piri seafood, and a peaceful atmosphere because it’s not overrun with tourists.
One of the best parts? Mozambique is affordable! It’s the only country where I didn’t have to pay extra for a bungalow just because I was traveling solo. You can buy a coconut for around 10 cents, a mango for 5 cents, and even a fish big enough to feed three people for about 380 MZN.
There are also a ton of unique experiences in Mozambique that you won’t find anywhere else, especially in places like Tofo Beach.
Tofo, located in southern Mozambique, is a small coastal town with a laid-back vibe. It’s an amazing spot for scuba diving, seeing whale sharks, or just relaxing on the beach. Here’s how to make the most of your time there:
1. Go Scuba Diving
Tofo is famous for its scuba diving, with plenty of big sea creatures like whales, dolphins, and whale sharks frequenting the waters. Unlike popular diving spots like the Maldives, you won’t have to compete with hordes of other divers, which makes the experience even better. Tofo Scuba, one of the local dive shops, offers dives for around 3,200 MZN.
2. Find Hidden Enclaves
Tofo is one of the few beach destinations where tourism seems to be on the decline, mostly due to its remote location and limited information about the area. The result? You’ll find fewer tourists and more interesting travelers—people working in agriculture, Peace Corps volunteers, and other curious souls who stumbled upon this hidden gem. The beaches are still pristine, the locals are warm, and the vibe is far from jaded.
3. Take a Boat Trip to the Offshore Islands
One of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Tofo is by taking a boat trip to the offshore islands. These trips are easy to organize, and with a group of friends, you can expect to pay around 2,000-2,500 MZN per person. The boats are simple, but the views are beautiful, and you can bring your own drinks to enjoy while you cruise the waters.
4. Ride a Quad Bike Through the Sand Dunes
Rent a quad bike in Tofo and explore the sand dunes behind the beach. You can ride through small villages, wave to local kids, and discover hidden beaches that aren’t accessible by foot. It’s a fun way to get around and see parts of the area you wouldn’t otherwise.
5. Hitch a Boleia
In Mozambique, hitchhiking is a common and easy way to get around, known locally as “boleia.” Tofo may be small, but if you need to get to the ATM or somewhere else, catching a boleia is a fun and relaxing way to travel. I’ve hitchhiked in the back of pickup trucks, enjoying the view as we passed through villages and mango groves. Sometimes, boleias are even boats! Just ask the locals for advice on where to wait for a ride.
Despite all the warnings I received, I’m so glad I visited Mozambique. It’s a place worth exploring, with its stunning beaches, friendly people, and unique experiences. Don’t let the lack of tourist hype discourage you. If you get the chance, go— and let me know how it goes!
