Cornwall, tucked away in the far west of England, is a blend of quaint farms, small towns, and charming fishing villages. Its history stretches back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age, making it a region steeped in centuries of maritime importance. However, nowadays, it’s often underrated and stereotyped somewhat like Kentucky or Tennessee are in the United States — but those stereotypes couldn’t be further from the truth.
What makes Cornwall truly special is its simple, slower-paced lifestyle. It’s a stark contrast to the bustling life around London where everyone seems to be rushing, rarely making eye contact. In Cornwall, people greet you with a smile, kids play outside until late, and there’s no shortage of outdoor activities to fill your days. This inviting atmosphere draws many families and couples looking for an escape from the city.
My visit to Cornwall was to reconnect with friends, Mat and Kat, whom I met while traveling in Vietnam. They introduced me to all the local gems, from cozy riverside dinners to the scenic Camel Trail — a 12-mile bike path that offers picturesque views of the countryside. Along the way, we stopped at Camel Valley Vineyards, a spot that rivals the charm and beauty of Vermont.
Padstow, our destination, was reminiscent of New England’s beloved coastal towns, bustling with tourists enjoying the seaside charm. Our day ended with a local BBQ that captured the essence of a tight-knit community, much like those found throughout New England.
For those planning a trip, Cornwall offers a wealth of attractions:
- Chygurno Gardens, perfect for a scenic stroll.
- Minack Theatre, an open-air venue with breathtaking views and regular performances.
- Chysauster Ancient Village, which offers a peek into Iron Age life.
- The Camel Trail, ideal for biking through diverse landscapes.
- St. Mawes Castle and Tintagel Castle, both steeped in history and legend.
- St Michael’s Mount, accessible by foot at low tide, offers a unique adventure.
- The Tate St Ives, where art lovers can enjoy modern pieces against an ocean backdrop.
Traveling to Cornwall is straightforward, with daily flights from London, train options, or even a scenic drive. Each mode of transport offers a different experience, but all lead to the same charming destination.
