WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF THE AIRLINE LOST YOUR LUGGAGE?

Have you ever had the frustrating experience of an airline losing your luggage? It’s happened to me three times in just one month, so I’ve gotten pretty good at dealing with the situation. Here’s what I’ve learned about getting your bag back and making sure the airline compensates you properly, because let’s face it, losing your luggage is the last thing you need, especially if you’re headed to something important like a wedding or honeymoon.

First off, each time my luggage was “lost,” I did eventually get it back, though it can be pretty scary when an airline straight up tells you they have no clue where your bag is. For instance, one time with IcelandAir, my bag was missing for nearly a week before I managed to get someone to find it. Thankfully, this kind of situation is rare. Airlines usually have a good track on your luggage through the bag tag number (always keep that sticker they give you at check-in!).

Statistically, the odds are low that your bag will be permanently lost. More often, bags just don’t show up at your destination due to tight connections or the complexity of multiple airlines. Only about 1 in 2,500 passengers will never see their luggage again. Still, too high for comfort, right? Check out my tips on preventing airlines from losing your luggage to feel more secure.

When that dreaded moment comes and you realize your bag isn’t coming off the carousel, here’s what you should do:

  1. Stay Calm and Be Nice: It pays to be polite. Remember, the airport staff didn’t cause the issue but they can certainly help resolve it. A kind approach can make things go smoother.
  2. Report Your Missing Bag Immediately: Talk to the airport agents. They’ll record your details and start tracking down your luggage, ideally getting it to you within 24 hours. Note down everything—the agent’s name, your case number, and any contact numbers. If it’s a multi-airline flight, remember to file your claim with the last airline you flew with.
  3. Check the Airline’s Lost Luggage Policy: After reporting your bag, call the airline to confirm their lost luggage policy. Knowing their compensation details is crucial because you might need to shop for essentials.
  4. Go Shopping: If your bag is delayed, the airline should cover necessary expenses. Save all receipts for things you need for your trip because you’ll need them to claim compensation later.
  5. Track Your Bag: While it’s tempting to monitor your bag’s whereabouts obsessively, try not to let it take over your vacation. A check once or twice a day is enough.
  6. Escalate if Needed: If things aren’t progressing, take it up a notch. Social media, especially Twitter, can be incredibly effective in getting a quick response from customer service.
  7. Submit Receipts for Reimbursement: Once your adventure in missing luggage is over, submit your receipts for reimbursement. It might take a couple of weeks, but you should get your expenses back.

And if your bag is truly lost? After about three weeks, you can file a claim for lost (not just delayed) luggage, which might entitle you to greater compensation. Each airline has its own process for this, so check their specific requirements.

Handling lost luggage can be a hassle, but with these steps, you’ll be better prepared to manage the situation and ensure you’re properly compensated.
